3,000 FUTA Students Benefit from Federal Student Loan Scheme
By Afolabi Nelson
The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adenike Oladiji, has said that over 3,000 students of the institution have benefited from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Speaking ahead of the university’s 36th convocation ceremony, Oladiji explained that the loan scheme, introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has eased the financial burden on students and helped them focus on their studies.
She said the university is actively guiding students on how to apply, though many remain hesitant due to poor awareness and misconceptions about schooling on credit. According to her, the low number of applicants is not because of government failure but because of students’ attitudes toward the scheme.
Oladiji commended President Tinubu for the initiative, describing it as a major step toward inclusive and accessible higher education.
On the convocation, she announced that 2,747 students will graduate this year 240 with First Class, 1,479 with Second Class (Upper Division), 912 with Second Class (Lower Division), and 116 with Third Class honours.
The overall best graduating student is Akindunbi Aduragbemi Isaac from the Department of Civil Engineering, who finished with a CGPA of 4.98.
In the postgraduate category, FUTA will award 867 higher degrees, including 86 Postgraduate Diplomas, 627 Master’s degrees, and 154 PhDs.
Oladiji reaffirmed the university’s dedication to student welfare and academic excellence, noting that FUTA continues to uphold its reputation as a leading technological institution in Nigeria.
