Court Clears Nnamdi Kanu to Stand Trial

By Afolabi Nelson

The medical panel set up by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed that Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not suffering from any life threatening illness.

The panel was appointed by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, to verify Kanu’s health condition after conflicting medical reports from both the prosecution and defence.

In its report submitted on October 13, the panel stated that Kanu is fit to stand trial. Based on this, and with no objections from the lawyers, Justice Omotosho ruled that the trial would continue.

The judge granted Kanu six days, starting October 23, to present his defence. He also approved a private meeting between Kanu and his legal team in the courtroom, away from the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure their discussion remains confidential.
