NIHSA Warns of Possible Flooding in Seven States

By Afolabi Nelson

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has warned of possible flooding in parts of Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Niger, Benue, and Adamawa States as water levels along the Niger and Benue Rivers continue to rise.

NIHSA’s Director General, Engr. Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, gave the warning during a press briefing in Abuja, urging residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and move to higher ground when advised by local authorities.

He said hydrological data show high water levels along the rivers, increasing the risk of localized flooding in nearby communities. Mohammed stressed that early warning and timely relocation are the best ways to prevent loss of lives and property.

The DG explained that NIHSA’s monitoring of surface and groundwater provides vital information for government and communities to plan for safe water use and climate resilience. He noted that the agency has upgraded its real-time data systems, improved its forecasts with satellite technology, and enhanced its early warning capacity.

Mohammed also said NIHSA’s Annual Flood Outlook remains a key tool for predicting flood risks and helping states prepare. Recent flood assessments revealed contamination of shallow wells by floodwater, prompting calls for stronger coordination among government agencies and partners to ensure access to safe drinking water.

Looking ahead, NIHSA is developing a Five-Year Strategic Action Plan focused on innovation, community engagement, and collaboration with agencies such as NIMET, NEMA, the National Water Resources Institute, the World Meteorological Organization, and UNESCO.
