The Senate has started screening Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sent Amupitan’s name to the Senate on Tuesday for screening and confirmation. Before the session began, the Senate suspended its rules to allow Amupitan and his entourage into the chamber. Those present included the President’s Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Basheer Lado; the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya; Amupitan’s wife, Mrs. Amupitan; and their three children Barrister Favour, Marvelous, and Beloved Amupitan.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio asked Amupitan to take the floor, jokingly telling him he could sit or ask for water during the session, saying, “We don’t want any incident here; our hospital is not ready yet.”
While presenting his profile, Amupitan said his life is guided by three key influences God, hard work, and mentorship. He also noted that he is the first Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Kogi State.
